* 投稿摘要：	Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid is an extremely rare tumor with a reported incidence of 0.2–1.1% of all thyroid carcinomas. We had an opportunity to diagnose one such case recently. This 81-year-old male patient presented a left thyroid mass. His thyroid function test revealed a normal T3, and TSH profile. Computerized tomography scan of the neck showed a large necrotic mass in left lobe thyroid with intrathoracic extension. The mass measured approximately 5  5  6 cm. Then, fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for the thyroid mass was performed. FNAC revealed features of squamous cell carcinoma including hyperchromatic nuclei, pleomorphic cells, tadpole and pyknotic nuclei. Keratinization was observed in some cells. The background was necrotic. The palliative resection of the thyroid carcinoma was performed. Histologically, the diagnosis of poorly-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma was rendered. Based on clinical and gross pathology presentation and radiological studies, the tumor was considered most probably primary from the thyroid. Unfortunately, the patient died 3 months after initial diagnosis. Because squamous cell carcinomas rarely present as a primary thyroid tumor, metastatic disease should always be excluded first.
