* 投稿摘要: Objectives: Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) has been shown to play a role in the development of insulin resistance (IR), type 2 diabetes (T2DM), obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among adults. However, data among adolescents are limited and the effects of gender and sex hormones on RBP4 are not well defined. Methods: A total of 1082 children were enrolled and categorized based on their body mass index. Blood samples were collected and biochemical characteristics, sex hormones, and RBP4 concentrations were determined. IR and body fat percentage were also measured. MetS was defined according to the International Diabetes Federation. Results: Boys had a higher obesity index, the majority of the cardiovascular risk factors, and higher testosterone and RBP 4 concentrations than girls. Insulin sensitivity indexes were similar between genders. Additionally, plasma RBP4 concentrations positively correlated with triglyceride (TG) levels in both genders, as well as obesity indices and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels in boys only. IR was not associated with RBP4 levels in both genders. Testosterone and estradiol were not directly correlated with RBP4 concentrations in both genders. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that FPG, TG and testosterone were independently associated with RBP4 concentrations in boys. There was a trend of increasing RBP4 levels with the severity of obesity in boys. Conclusion: Plasma RBP4 concentrations correlated with obesity and cardiovascular risk factors, but not with IR, in adolescence. Furthermore, it observed gender differences, which predominantly evident in boys. Lastly, testosterone, FPG and TG levels were independent predictors of RBP4 concentrations.
