* 投稿摘要： Introduction: Nitric oxide (NO) is constitutively synthesized by endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) which plays an important role in both physiological and pathological functions. The role of NO/eNOS expression in the progression of breast tumors has not been entirely clarified yet. Therefore, we would evaluate the association between NO/eNOS expression and breast cancer. Methods: The tumor tissues from 278 patients with breast cancer were investigated for the expression of eNOS using immunohistochemistry. The levels of nitrite and nitrate in the blood samples were assayed by capillary electrophoresis. Results: There were no significant differences between the eNOS expression and related clinical characteristics, expect the tumor size. Additionally, neither nitrite nor nitrate was related to eNOS expression. However, the levels of NO (nitrite, nitrate, and total NO) were significant higher in those patients with lymph-node metastasis; the nitrite levels were higher in those patients with ER positive; the nitrate levels were higher in those patients with HER-2 positive. Moreover, there was a trend association between either nitrite or total NO and hormone statuses. Conclusion: This study showed that the NO and eNOS expression were associated with breast cancer; however, there was no association between the eNOS expression and the levels of NO in breast cancer. Therefore, we speculate there would be another pathway to generate NO to affect breast cancer except eNOS.
